The stunning fact that the park ranger shared was that from the edge of Margerie Glacier, we were 56 nautical miles (as the crow flies) from the nearest building, road, or man-made structure. To put that in perspective, the farthest anywhere in the continental US is in the heart of Yellowstone National Park, which is 23 miles from the nearest place. Wow! The ruggedness and remoteness was so stunning.
We also learned just how recently the ice had receded - that for most of US history, much of it was under ice - and even into the 1970s, big parts of the inlet were under ice.
Just to the side (not pictured) was Ferris Glacier, which in many ways was much larger - just had a large moraine wall that was far less picturesque.
