A last day at Angkor

It is absolutely mesmerizing seeing massive trees dwarfing the ancient temples. Angkor Wat has the incredible combination of places such as Machu Picchu and Petra -- the stunning ancient ruins in the midst of magnificent natural beauty.

We couldn't get enough of the massive trees dwarfing the walls of the temples. There is definitely much more to explore, and two days was just a teaser. Hopefully we will be back in the not too distant future.

Very nice pictures -- and video. Thanks.

But how does it rank?

No. __: Angkor Wat
No. __: Petra
No. __: Machu Pichu

Tough call. But probably

1. Petra
2. Machu Picchu
3. Angkor Wat

Petra's immensity and unexplored area can't be beat. Machu Picchu also has great areas around where you can explore. Angkor Wat has quiet areas and little hidden corners, but each temple is so far apart that it is separate - needing the transportation to explore it all puts it lower than the other 2.

I would agree with Doug's rating, although Machu Picchu's dramatic setting makes it a tough call for me ... to put it in 2nd place. - Dad

My boss went to Machu Pichu recently and said it didn't have anything on Angkor Wat. So to each his own, I guess. (He is a big fan of all things east Asia.)

I'm probably biased to Petra, due to a certain engagement happening there. Perhaps that clouds my objectivity.

oh. i see... this is the conversation i'm missing out on. After 3 hours of diligently reading your blog, I've finally come upon the family meeting. I'd like to comment on the rankings... I've not been to any of the mentioned locations. So I rank them all as about the same. But I AM going to the Portland Airport tomorrrow night for a birthday party... and i'm sure that will be better than any of those. i'll be sure to post that on my blog. and i'd like to ask a question at this time: why did my eldest brother not take me to Machu Pichu when I so lovingly visited him in Peru??????? And why didn't he pay my way to Jordan so he could take me to Petra? But alas, it's not too late... he can pay my way to Cambodia so he can take me to Angkor Wat.

Since this is the family meeting place and I have been to all three locations my vote is #1 Machu Picchu, #2 Petra and #3 Angkor Wat. I trust Tasha that you can join the family in KL for Christmas 1010. Angkor Wat is only a 2 hour plane trip away (I'll buy your ticket.) I'll stay in KL and watch any kids who don't go with the parents and Auntie.

Indeed, you come to Malaysia, and we will find I will pay your way to Angkor Wat.

I only hope that I can join you, as I would love to go back for a longer visit next time.

Perhaps the kids will be ready to come too?

Though I hope you don't find a time machine and end up in 1010 trying to meet Suryavarman II, the famed king who built Angkor Wat.

PS: Welcome to our secret family meeting place.

I also was wondering how Tasha would arrange a trip to Angkor Wat in 1010 A.D. - Dad

What amazing trees and ruins!
Reminds me of the uniqueness of Petra, too.
Looking forward to seeing you all soon! C
