Golden Lake & Above

The trail reports had said that there was snow on the way to Golden Lake, and we weren't sure if we would be able to make it there, let alone to the tarns above.  As we climbed out of Park Meadow, we encountered our first snow banks - which was a big thrill for the kids.  We also more great views of broken top through the trees.

Golden Lake.  Wow.  Truly Golden.  It was a picturesque spot and a super place for a break.  As we climbed up to the tarns, we sometimes had trouble finding the trail with all the snowbanks, but it would invariably reappear.  At the end, the stream coming out of the tarns would dip under the snowbanks for stretches at a time.  After too long of fruitless searching, we realized the second tarn really did not exist - it was still one big snowbank.  As a result, we camped by the lower (only) tarn which was still one-third covered in ice.

A wonderful camp site with unbelievable views and a fire at the edge of a snowbank that had views of the sisters, Jefferson, Hood and as far north as Mt. Adams!  With the soon to be supermoon rising over Broken Top, it was a day to remember!
